Travel Battle from Perry Miniatures: I'm in.

An exciting announcement. But what's in the box?

Yesterday, Perry Miniatures released details for their new game Travel Battle and opened pre-orders. I almost immediately let my dealer, er I mean, friendly local retailer, Kings Hobbies and Games know I wanted a copy. I've followed this project with interest since the Perrys began releasing information about it. While I'm not anything like a Napoleonics fanatic, it does hold a passing interest for me. I am certainly a fan of small-scale figures. Additionally, I like the models the Perry brothers produce. So, two out of three ain't bad.

The early news that it was small-scale gave me hope for God's Own Scale, 6mm. In their announcement, they state they went with 8mm because "We toyed with 6mm but found them too small and 10mm were too big to fit with the terrain and scenery and so plumped for something in the middle." However, looking at the pictures they posted of impressions made form the molds, they might be close enough to 10mm to suit, as seen below.

These look like they're 8mm to the eye. Insert commentary on the need for standardized scales in wargaming figures.

The models are described as "generic Napoleonic forces," and I'm fine with that.

I don't have any 10mm figures in my collection, but I did find a comparison pic of various ranges. I'm thinking it might be worth mixing figures from similarly sized ranges. Not the same units, of course, but again, maybe it'll work. It certainly would help to have specialists and uniquely uniformed troops, such as rocket troops and Highlanders to fill out what the Perry plastics don't have.

Reiterate the need for scale standards in our fine hobby. Exhibit A: This photo of "10mm" figures.
As for the number of figures, they state the contents as:
  • 160 x Infantry
  • 24 x Cavalry
  • 4 x Guns and 12 crew
  • 6 x Brigadiers
  • 2 x 10" 3D Terrain boards
  • 6 x Buildings
  • 4 x Dice
  • 1 x Set of rules

Looking at the picture of the full layout, it looks to me like:
  • 16 x bases of infantry
  • 4 x bases of heavy cavalry
  • 4 x bases of light cavalry
  • 4 x bases of artillery with crew
  • 6 x leader types
Currently, £50 GBP is about $62.50 USD. So, not a great deal. But not a terrible one, either. Most online retailers offer discounts in the 15% to 30% range. That will make it a better deal.

It is possible the largest single expenditure in the box is the terrain boards. As fun or great as the Travel Battle rules might be, I'll probably stick with Commands & Colors: Napoleonics. I already own and enjoy the game. No sense in reinventing the wheel. So, the terrain boards don't really excite me. The little houses might be handy, though. Then again, they say the game can be played "almost anywhere." Perhaps an energetic player could magnetize the bases and board to play while traveling.

I like the color-matching dice. Two pairs of dice leads me to believe most things are handled with a roll of two dice and move on. Could be fun. Besides, who doesn't need more dice?

Despite the forces being "generic" and for an era I'm not particularly enthusiastic for,  the scale being neither the widely accepted 6mm or 10mm, and the inclusion of rules I'll probably never use, this product has me excited. "And why," you might ask? Because this product represents two very promising things to me.

First, someone is making small-scale historical figures in plastic, regardless of the era and belligerents modeled. While they're not from any of my preferred eras, I'll put the Napoleonic era in the "close enough" column to pique my interest.

Second, the hangup over the figures being "just right" to fit the terrain boards tells me they led the project with the terrain boards. Why would that be? I'm just speculating, but perhaps, they needed the boards to fit in a particular size of box and with little or no wasted space in the box. Why would this be? Perhaps to ease shipping in large quantities to wholesalers and retailers both? Perhaps also to fit on store shelves? Perhaps in stores such as Barnes & Noble, Target and Toys R Us in the US, and WH Smith and Waterstones in the UK and EU? Add in that they include a painting guide in the box for the figures and terrain board. It's not just a boardgame with figures. It's an entree to the miniatures gaming hobby.

So, yes. I'm buying it because I want the Perrys to continue with it. I want them to release "expansion packs" of just the figure and base frames for cheaper. I want them to release more models from the era in plastic and metal both. I want them to expand into other eras such as the American Civil War, Seven Years War, Ancients, Medieval, and many more. Most of all, I want new gamers to discover the joy of the hobby also resides outside of Games Workshop, Privateer Press and Fantasy Flight. This will only happen if we support efforts such as this.

Phenomenal cosmic power

That's how it feels trying out an airbrush. I got a Badger 105 Patriot airbrush and TC908 Aspire compressor for Christmas. Today, I got a few minor items to get operational.

Three Chaos Thugs and a Rat Swarm. They were literally within arm's reach, so I threw some paint on them.
I solved some air leak issues with a bit of teflon tape and used some distilled water and isopropyl alcohol as thinner. The paint I used was Vallejo Model Color thinned to the classic milk-like consistency referenced everywhere.

There is plenty of subtlety in the use of airbrush, but it can be used to make some pretty fine effects. I'm looking forward to getting some real thinner and flow aid from Vallejo in the near future. This has opened up some all new avenues.

Best part is, it was about 18 degrees Fahrenheit outside when I primed theses dudes. No way I'd be able to do this a spray can.

Gaming with the kids: Sci-Fi Dungeon

My kids, wife and I enjoy playing games. One of the biggest challenges, however has been in adapting existing games to better serve the six-year-old abilities of our son, Master J.

"But, Jay," I hear you exclaim. "Just play 'Candyland,' or 'Chutes and Ladders,' or some other junk game from Wally World!"

If only "Candyland was as cool as it's portrayed in "Wreck It Ralph."
To that I say "Nonsense!" The boy wants to play the games we buy in real game stores. I'm not going to deny him that.  The most recent game that has captured his attention is "Boss Monster II" from Brotherwise Games. I acquired it at Winternomicon, as discussed in Episode 7 of the podcast. The game looks like it'd be a ton of fun. However, its gameplay is a bit deep for a six-year-old. So, I devised some simple rules based on the numbers and icons on the cards. We played it two or three times over this past weekend, and have had a blast.

Really cool. Check it out.

I must mention that a challenge we've had with Master J is him simply following the rules. This is an ongoing problem which has resulted in frustrating sessions of the aforementioned "Candyland" and "Chutes and Ladders," as well as "Mouse Trap," "Hungry, Hungry Hippos," "Break the Ice" and many other childhood favorites.

Happily, the modified "Boss Monster II" version has resulted in more rule following. I should note that our sessions playing "Dungeon!" have seen a marked increase in rule following. I suspect it might have to with the subject matter. This might bear further study.

Worth every penny.
This evening, Master J wanted to play "Boss Monster II" and I thought there might be an opportunity.

"Hey, bud, do you want to work on making your own game tonight," I asked him.

"Yeah!"

We quickly went to work with assistance from his ten-year-old sister, Miss C.

What follows are the first draft of rules that Master J has named "Sci-Fi Dungeon." (Note: all character names, and opponent types were created by Master J. His dad took input from him and his sister in developing the rules.)

Sci-Fi Dungeon
Setting:
A space station. Or a missile defense base. Or a dark, dank, dungeon. Wherever fetid evil squats.

Profiles:
Heroes and monsters both have the following stats on their profiles.
Move
Ranged
Melee
Defense

Heroes have multiple wounds, or maybe an armor save. We haven't gotten that far, to be honest.

Monsters only have a single wound, as they need to be cleft in twain.

Characters:
Heroes
Astronaut - What he's doing fighting evil, we don;t know. Some men are just in the right place at the right time. Where'd he get that gun, anyway?
Move - 4
Ranged - 5
Melee - 3
Defense - 4

Zombie Hunter - He does what is job title says. He's identical to Martian Killer. He has a chopper. The implication is that it's an edged weapon, possibly a cleaver. But maybe it's a motorcycle, also.
Move - 5
Ranged - 3
Melee - 5
Defense - 3

Monsters
Zombies - Of course. Why wouldn't we have zombies?
Move - 2
Ranged - 0
Melee - 2
Defense - 2

Ratmen - Well, they were on hand. And painted. That helped in their selection.
Move - 3
Ranged - 2 (probably just thrown rocks, ninja stars, that sort of thing)
Melee - 2
Defense - 2

Martians - They're Cuisinarts on legs. Don't get too close. In fact, don't get in the same room as these dudes. Just shoot them through a wall if you can.
Move - 4
Ranged - 0
Melee - 3
Defense - 3

Rat Ogre - Big, bad, not overly bright. His ranged attack is of undetermined origin.
Move - 2
Ranged - 3
Melee - 3
Defense - 4

Boss Monster
Soul Collector is an old Nurgle Champion I painted before I knew the kids' mom. Thanks to me getting him out of storage, I have the desire to put together a Chaos force for my Commands & Colors Fantasy project.
The Shuttle Bay is made from Worldworks Games' Firstlight file pack and foam board.

Soul Collector - He's large and in charge. Apparently, he has some electrified attack, but we haven't fleshed that out just yet.
Move - 3
Ranged - 0
Melee - 8
Defense - 5

Turn sequence:
Heroes go first. They can move and perform an action. Actions include shoot, melee or search (more actions later, I'm sure).

Monsters go second. They can move and attack. Very few monsters have a ranged attack. Apparently, their dread overlord, Soul Collector, doesn't want to pay for guns, ammo, or training time.

Movement:

Miss C moves the Zombie Hunter to a supply pile to search for Alien Coins.
Supply piles 3D prints available from King's Hobbies and Games

Use a grided play surface or not. If not, use inches. Terrain doesn't affect movement just yet. A hero can move some of its movement, perform an action and then finish its movement.

Monsters move then attack. That's all they know.

Ranged and Melee Attacks:
The Zombie Hunter faces down a horde of Zombies and Martians!

Both are handled the same way. The attacker rolls a number of dice equal to her character's Ranged or Melee stat. The defender rolls a number of dice equal to his Defense stat. Both players order their dice from highest to lowest. Compare the dice against each other. Defender wins ties. Each of the attacker's dice that are greater than the defender's counts as a wound. See the image below for an example.

Master J attacks a Zombie. He rolls the Zombie Hunter's three dice (blue) for a ranged attack, scoring a 5, 4, and 3. Jay rolls his Zombie's defense of two dice (red), scoring 6, and 2. Jay's 6 defeats Master J's 5, no hit! Master J's 4 defeats Jay's 2, and the 3 also hits. The two hits are enough to down the Zombie!

This is obviously a game in the earliest stages of development. Obviously, we need to look at giving monsters more than one wound. I had some scenario rules for fighting in the shuttle bay and searching the supply piles. I'll set those down in a later blog post.

We've had fun so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing where we can take this. If you have thoughts or suggestions, leave a comment here or on the Facebook page.
